Description

The Stone Town of Zanzibar is a fine example of the Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa. It retains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains many fine buildings that reflect its particular culture, which has brought together and homogenized disparate elements of the cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe over more than a millennium.

As part of the documentation project, the Zamani team recorded two Persian baths, the so-called Hammani, which was originally built for the public (1870-88) and a small royal bath, which was
built for the Sultan's family inside one of the palaces (Beit al-Tahin) - today Forodhani School. In addition, the project documented the Peace Memorial Museum. Beit el-Amani, as it was originally named, was built as a monument, memorizing the end of the First World War. The building was completed in 1925.
